EVENING OF SEVDAH: The Love Songs of Bosnia and Hercegovina
Artists from Bosnia and Hercegovina, America, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia will share their common love for this beloved music. Emotive vocalists will show the rich variety of song styles from soaring, highly modal melodies to sprightly humorous ditties. Instrumental textures will range from the traditional saz to tamburica orchestra to the more modern sound of accordion. The poetry of sevdah songs (sevdalinke) will be translated from Bosnian into English so that everyone can enjoy the rich poetic imagery, historical and cultural references. Two children's dance groups will bring their youthful exuberance to the stage. The concert will engage community members of all ages in decorating the stage like a traditional Bosnian house, as ushers, making and selling handicrafts, publicity and more. It is our hope that this event will inspire many artistic collaborations and serve as a model for other communities and cultures.
Evening of Sevdah is supported in part by generous donations from the Seattle Peoples Fund and City of Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and sponsored by Ethnic Heritage Council and New Land Music.
