Santa Cruz , CA ( November 5, 2011) The Voice of Africa, a San Francisco-based African band is scheduling live performances with the goal of raising funds for Global Women Intact, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to eliminating female circumcision and genital mutilation customs in Africa through education. Managed by Sia Amma, a Liberian-born standup comic, dancer, actress, and vocalist, the Voice of Africa band focuses on African traditional music from the Kissi tribes of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. "Our performances are designed to engage our audience with the deep rhythms and drums of West African tribal music create awareness of a significant global health issue for women, and raise funds to travel to Africa to work directly with women, girls and community leaders," said Amma.
With music enriched with powerful messages about women and social/cultural liberation, the Voice of Africa band includes a number of respected African musicians from the Mali, Senegal, and Guinea. "I am thrilled to be surrounded by such talented and passionate musicians who have come together for such a wonderful cause," said Amma.
In several African countries, female circumcision, or the removal of the clitoris, is considered a rite of passage for girls transitioning to womanhood. The procedure is known to cause severe infections, mutilation, psychological harm, and death. "The power of hands-on education, and face-to-face negotiations with community leaders allows us to educate African communities of the dangers associated with female circumcision, and help them develop alternative customs that mark significant milestones without harming girls through these barbaric acts," said Amma.
The Voice of Africa band is available for 2-hour performances of original music. The band has played venues such as Yoshi's San Francisco, drawing audiences of more than 500. All proceeds from every performance will be donated to Global Women Intact.
