Phoebe Apperson Hearst: An American Treasure
Phoebe Apperson Hearst: An American Treasure
WHO IS THE LITTLE LADY FROM CALIFORNIA?
Hearst Castle is a state monument dedicated to the memory of two people; "to William Randolph Hearst, who built it, and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who inspired it". Everyone has heard of William but who was Phoebe? Phoebe Apperson Hearst was one of the most influential philanthropists in the late19th and early 20th centuries. She founded organizations, and sponsored innovations that affect Americans every day. Mount Vernon, the National Cathedral, UC Berkeley and the PTA are just a few of the institutions that, if not for the "little lady from California," might not exist for the 21st century public.
ANOTHER "LITTLE LADY FROM CALIFORNIA! MAKING HISTORY COME ALIVE!"
Karen Harris began to research Phoebe while a guide at Hearst Castle. There she developed a Phoebe Apperson Hearst training module and was asked to present it to the other park employees. Her research was also utilized by authors Victoria Kastner and Catherine Davis. No longer a guide, Ms Harris continues to research, write and speak about Phoebe. Atascadero Performing Arts Center Committee will present her one-woman show "Phoebe Apperson Hearst: An American Treasure" September 25, 2015.
