2007-10-03 Never Perfect
Directed by Regina Park (2007, 63 min, Color, Video, USA). Over 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States in 2006, catapulting the cosmetic surgery industry into an $11.4 billion operation. Among Asian American women, double eyelid surgery, which creates an artificial fold along the upper eyelid, has emerged as a cosmetic surgical procedure occurring with increasing frequency.
NEVER PERFECT explores the emotional and physical journey of 27-year-old Vietnamese American Mai-Anh as she undergoes the double eyelid procedure. In a self-described "quarterlife crisis", Mai-Anh explains the reasons behind her decision, as she grapples with Western perceptions of beauty and perfection. This film is an informative and discerningly contemplative look into the world of cosmetic surgery as seen through the eyes of one woman.
