Community Women's Orchestra - Annual Family Concert
The Community Women's Orchestra kicks off its 27th season with the Annual Family Concert led by Dr. Kathleen McGuire, conductor and Jessica Bejarano, assistant conductor.
The program features: - John Williams' STAR WARS SUITE - 20th anniversary edition - Leonard Bernstein's OVERTURE TO CANDIDE - *Lorin Alexander's LULLABY - Special Guests performing selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet: + the Song-flutes from Berkeley Arts Magnet and Le Conte Elementary Schools led by CWO flutist Kristin Brooks-Davidman + Strings Attached led by Sandra I. Noriega and June Bonacich
Notes on the program: STAR WARS SUITE includes music from the film not previously available for concert performance. According to CWO's conductor Dr. Kathleen McGuire, "This is music for people of any age. The women of the orchestra are really excited about it, and will even wear Star Wars costumes while they play!" Audience members are encouraged to come in costume, and a contingent of Storm Troopers, along with Darth Vader, will make an appearance.
Especially for the kids, the orchestra will host an Instrument Zoo during intermission. Children will have the opportunity to meet with members of the orchestra and learn about - and even play some of - the various instruments. Special coloring books with line-drawings of orchestra members by artist/violist Judy Johnson-Williams will be available for the children to take home.
The Community Women's Orchestra was founded in 1985 by conductor Nan Washburn. The orchestra provides female orchestral musicians with the opportunity to enjoy a fun, welcoming and non-competitive music-making environment, performing programs that include works by female composers.
