Chris Barreto: Berimbau Reggae CD Release
A vivacious and dynamic soloist and musical collaborator, Chris Barreto was born in Vitoria Espirito Santo, Brazil. In 1988 she moved to Rio de Janeiro where she met Caudio Nucci, the renowned Brazilian singer, songwriter, guitarist and music producer. Nucci became the most important musical influence in her life, and they lived in Ipenama for five years, rubbing shoulders with Tom Jobim, Djavan, Mario Adnet, Sergio Santos, Guinga and many other musical luminaries. With music in her heart Barreto moved to New York where she studied Fashion Design, and then launched her own independent label with hand painted fabrics, that gained fame when Madonna met her and chose her outfits for her stage performances. Barreto will showcase her skills as a multi media artist on November 5th with a staged Fashion Show, simultaneous projected films, and two sets of live music, featuring her voice with Bernard Bieres on guitar, Aaron Friedman on Bass, Rawn Rasta on Keyboard, and Rogerio Araujo on drums and percussion. Her music is rooted in Brazilian Rhythm, layered with electronic dance beats. She is strongly influenced by the Repentistas, the improvising folkloric guitarists of North Eastern Brazil. Barreto is also captivated by the classic Berimbau sounds of the Capoeira martial arts dance music, and the concert will feature an unusual live collaboration with several local Capoeira dancers. Andrea Torres of Samadhi Hawaii will "fly in" as guest aerialist.
