A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and nominated in 2010 for a Tony Award, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play is a provocative, funny, touching, and entertaining story about a young doctor, his wife, and his patients. Set in the 1880s, the play takes place at a time when electricity was a brand new technology and doctors believed that "hysterical" women (and men) could be treated with vibrators. Dr. Givings is obsessed with the marvels of technology and what it can do for his patients. His wife, Catherine, is only a bystander in her husband's worldlistening at the door from the next room as he treats his female patients. Dr. Givings is not exactly sure how the vibrators help, but he is convinced of their efficacy because the women keep coming back for more treatments. The only woman whose problem is not helped by the doctor is his own wife, who longs to connect with him.
