DAVID JOHNSON "HOORAY FOR LOVE"
Classic crooner David Johnson happily headlines "Hooray For Love", a tuneful tribute to the Golden Songs of the Golden Age of the Movies. Some of these tunes are celebrated, some are obscure, but all are most definitely melodious. The show features the lilting and timeless music of such great composers as Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn and Harry Warren. These nifty numbers were first introduced on screen by the likes of movie stars Fred Astaire, Vic Damone, Tony Martin, Howard Keel, Lena Horne, Betty Grable and Dick Haymes. For this engagement, talented desert favorite Joel Baker will serve as musical director and accompany Mr. Johnson on piano for the October 16th, 2 PM performance, as part of Les Michaels' Sunday matinee cabaret series at the Arthur Newman Theatre at The Joslyn Center in Palm Desert.
Lyric baritone David Johnson calls himself 'a late bloomer'. He came to the world of performing on the cabaret stages of Los Angeles following 30 years as a writer in the entertainment-magazine field. It was only after his retirement that he began to sing in public when, he was discovered by multi-media luminary Constance Towers. Ms. Towers is known for among other things, co-starring with Yul Brynner in the Broadway revival of The King, and as arch-villainess Helena Cassadine on ABC's General Hospital). David's professional engagements in the LA area include stints at The Gardenia, Vitello's, Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill, Bel Age Hotel, and The Paul G. Gleason Theatre in Hollywood, where he has made six appearances. An old-movie buff, Johnson's patter deftly introduces each of the period songs with a personal air of expertise, in fact, many of these tunes are featured in Johnson's new CD, "Mind If I Make Love To You?", which is slated for release this Fall.
