Space.City presents El Dorado
6 PM, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Expanding Practice Fall Lecture Series Expanding Practice, the title of Space.City's fall lecture series, concentrates on paradigms and people that are reclaiming and reshaping the practice of architecture. The individuals selected to lecture represent a variety of sizes of practices, yet each offer, in their own way, innovative approaches to the process and pursuit of design. Whether it be rethinking the traditional business model of architecture, challenging the boundaries of the discipline, or expanding the conceptual possibilities of architectural effect, all the lecturers will serve to inspire a renewed spirit of design.
EL DORADO INC The designing + making concept behind el dorado inc began in 1995, when architect Jamie Darnell began taking welding classes and four more of us (Doug Stockman, Dan Maginn, Chris Kelsey and David Murrell) decided to glom on to his blue collar glory. Our objective was to establish el dorado inc in the public eye as an architectural firm. And not just any architectural firm, but the Most Progressive and Innovative Architectural Firm in Kansas City. We've been around for fourteen years now. Think about itthat's a long time for a group of previously-independently-minded do-gooders to play nice, practice serious architecture and make well-made stuff together. We are preparing for the next fourteen by organizing our collaborative design studio to better reflect the diverse market segments in which we are most effective. By segmenting our practice, our Commercial, Industrial, Civic/Institutional, Public Art and Residential Studios will each be able to effectively focus on those project types for our clients. As we prepare for the next fourteen, we are united in our vision. We are rested and ready, primed to give our revitalized economy an enthusiastic and well-crafted bear hug.
David Dowell, AIA received degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and the University of California, Berkeley. He joined el dorado inc as a Principal in 1998. In 2008, David received an Award for Distinction from Washington University's Sam Fox School, the same year el dorado was named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York. He became a GSA National Peer Reviewer in early 2011 and currently sits on the University of Kansas Architecture Department Advisory Board. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley, Technical University in Dresden, Germany, Washington University in St. Louis, Lawrence Institute of Technology, University of Kansas and currently teaches at Kansas State University.
Dan Maginn, AIA is a Principal with el dorado inc with over 22 years of expertise designing and managing a wide range of architectural, public art and fabrication projects. In addition, Dan has written design-themed essays for national magazines such as Dwell and GOOD. A graduate of the Tulane School of Architecture in 1989, Dan has stayed in close contact with the School, and currently serves on it's Advisory Board. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Street Foundation, an award-winning arts organization headquartered in Kansas City.
