Alistair Donkin, who delighted Portland audiences for three seasons with his triumphant stagings of Gilbert and Sullivan, returns to Marylhurst from the United Kingdom to direct an entirely new production of Bernstein's comedic masterpiece. "All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds," or so the young, naive Candide believes. Will his numerous collisions with the harsh realities of life shake his faith? Is there hope in eternal optimism? Or is there a middle path? Bernstein called his score a Valentine's card to European music; it's both a brilliantly funny comedic romp and a scathing indictment of political oppression and moral hypocrisy.
