The dances you will see at Looking Left/California cover a variety of subjects. What these choreographers have in common is a commitment to artistry, curiosity, intellectual rigor and deeply embodied dancing. Looking Left producer and local choreographer Cid Pearlman will premiere the first sections of Drowning Poems. Los Angeles based Stephanie Nugent will present a quartet titled yes is not passive. Damara Vita Ganley & Melecio Estrella, who also dance with Joe Goode Performance Group and Project Bandaloop, will combine movement and sound to craft intimate lifescapes. Working with veteran dance artist Carol McDowell (collaborator with Karen Finley, Pooh Kaye and Yvonne Meier), Rebecca Alson-Milkman brings an excerpt from her evening length Surveillance Solos to Santa Cruz. Also on the program are Dixie FunLee Shulman's Noam and a brand new solo by Los Angeles' Meg Wolfe, made specifically for Looking Left. See below for more information on each artist's project.
Looking Left/California will host three workshops, sponsored by the Cabrillo College Dance Department and Motion at the Mill, taught by Stephanie Nugent (Contemporary Technique), Meg Wolfe (Composition/Improvisation) and Rebecca Alson-Milkman (A Re-Education of the Body). These classes will be held on Saturday. $20 each, $50 for all three workshops, $40 for Cabrillo and UCSC students. Register at Motion at the Mill. 131 front Street Downtown SC.
