Mokai CD Release Party, with Professor Burns
This album is the result of an intense period of writing and developing a long-held musical vision. Come help me celebrate a work I am truly proud of.

The party and performances will be at The Subterranean Arthouse, 2179 Bancroft Way, in Berkeley CA, on November3rd from 8pm to 11:30pm. We'll feature a special performance by Professor Burns and friends, and I'll do songs from the album, accompanied on upright bass by Joshua Zucker (Houston Jones) and Scott Simmons on guitar.
Background
Mokai is a San Francisco based folk-blues artist whose roots-sound is the perfect vehicle for the big themes and intricate details in his songs. He's made hundreds of live appearances, and is well-known in the Bay Area live acoustic music scene. He's at home in intimate spaces like premier San Francisco venues Yoshi's Lounge and Cafe Du Nord, and on stage at large N. California festivals like Earthdance, Reggae on the River, and Solfest. Mokai has shared bills with popular independent artists like David Jacobs-Strain, Walter Strauss, and Blame Sally.
"The title of my new album, "Any Distraction'll Do"is a songwriter's perspective on our current dilemmas" says Mokai. "I like it when folk-blues guitar styles can be a vehicle for contemporary themes. Roots Americana isn't always all about pretending to be hillbilly or a cowboy. The blues is about lifeeverybody's life".

Professor Burns has become a local favorite for his mesmerizing voice, his finely crafted stories and the way his lank form sways as he lovingly holds his tiny, antique Martin guitar to his chest. His EP release "Orange Blossom Blinds" is a testament to his soothing, immersive take on roots music.
"This is the messy mystery affair of the guitar poet: leaning in to the uncertain with focused eyes and a ready laugh" says the enigmatic Professor, a Ph.D. instructor of social movement history and critical theory. "It's really about a spectrum of emotions, not genres. Fans tell us they hear all kinds of lineagefrom Van Morrison and The Band to Ben Harper and Bright Eyes."
