Vancouver International Flamenco Festival | Andrés Peña Company & Pilar Ogalla
Andres Peña from Cadiz, and Pilar Ogalla from Jerez de la Frontera, co-performing "Cadiz de la Frontera", a uniquely reflective work about the poetic entanglements of the sea and earth elements in Andalusia viewed through the prism of their respective flamenco.
ANDRES PENA MORON (1976) was born in Jerez de la Frontera and made his first Flamenco-moves at age 10 taking lessons with Angelita Gómez. He then pursued his flamenco training with master artists Manolete, Antonio Canales, Carmen Cortes, Javier Latorre amongst many others. As a professional he performed with a dozen world renown companies such as Manuel Morao y Gitanos de Jerez and La Compañia de la Changa and contributed to the shows of José Luis Montón, Pepe Justicia, Duquende, Juana Amaya and Miguel Poveda ("Sin Frontera"). As a solo performer Andrés Peña performed at the best-known tablaos in Madrid, Barcelona and Osaka (Japan) as well as in prestigious theatres and on concert stages in Sevilla, Cádiz, and Jerez. An accomplished artist and flamenco visionary he has toured internationally with his own Company in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, France, Portugal, Lebanon and Italy. Recently he was at the Barbican Centre in London. At the beginning of his international career Andrés Peña was rewarded as the best young dancer at the XI Bienal de Flamenco in Sevilla.
PILAR OGALLA was born in Cádiz and also started flamenco at the age of 10 studying with renowned flamenco dancers such as Concha Baras, Matilde Coral, Cristina Hoyos, Manuela Carrasco, Eva "La Yerbabuena" and Antonio Canales. She made her official debut in 1982 in "Las Calles de Cai" in the Gran Teatro Falla in Cádiz going on to perform through the years with some of the most illustrious flamenco singers, dancers and guitar players including Juan Villar, Adela "La Chaqueta", Alfonso de Gaspar, de Ginetos brothers, and dancing with famous companies such as "Los niños de la Tertulia Flamenca de la Isla", attending many Andalusian festivals leading to a feature in "Camino del flamenco", a programme by Canal Sur and, last but not least, to a performance for the Spanish queen Sophia and princess Cristina. Amongst countless remarkable performances that lead her to later tour in Austria, France, Miami and Japan are shows with Compañia Cristina Hoyos in Sevilla, Gira Sueca with "Al Aire" and "Por el flamenco", Gira COPE 2000 and "Colores" with Rafael de Carmen at the XI Bienal de Sevilla to name a few. Pilar also participated as a guest artist in "Dime" and "Flamenco y Punto" by the Compañia de Javier Barón in France. As a teacher, Pilar Ogalla operated "ASOCIACIÓN DE JÓVENES FLAMENCOS" from 1994 to 2000 and has taught classes and workshops internationally.
