Sunday, November 27 at 4 & 7:30 pm Joshua Roman: Bach Cello Suites Town Hall's classical-music series kicks off its 2011-12 season with a special performance destined to become a classic itself: TownMusic artistic director Joshua Roman, former principal cellist with the Seattle Symphony, performs all six Bach Cello Suites in a special two-part concert (with a dinner break in between). J.S. Bach wrote his rich and varied Six Suites for solo cello circa 1717-23, whereupon they lay dormant until the early 20th century. No significant works for solo cello were composed until Pablo Casals rediscovered the Bach Suites and helped propel them to their position among the world's most cherished music. (You might recall that Roman's 2007 Town Hall debut featured Bach's extraordinary and extraordinarily demanding Sixth Suite.)
Sunday, January 29 at 7:30 pm Brooklyn Rider Formed while working in Yo Yo Ma's globetrotting ensemble the Silk Road Project, Brooklyn Rider was born out of a desire to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for borderless communication. Back for a return TownMusic performance, the group--featuring violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and cellist Eric Jacobson builds programs that careen from the romantic to the contemporary. With its wildly eclectic voice, Brooklyn Rider is re-creating the 300-year-old form of string quartet as a vital and creative 21st-century ensemble; tonight the group brings its special approach to work by Beethoven and Zorn.
Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 pm Alarm Will Sound Alarm Will Sound is a 20-member band committed to innovative performances and recordings of contemporary music, with a reputation for performing demanding music with energetic skill. The group's performances have been described as "equal parts exuberance, nonchalance, and virtuosity" by the London Financial Times, and The New York Times says Alarm Will Sound is "the future of classical music" and "the very model of a modern music chamber band." With a repertoire ranging from European to American works and from the arch-modernist to the pop-influenced, Alarm Will Sound performs a program featuring works by John Adams and Aphex Twin.
