TownMusic: Joshua Roman: Bach Cello Suites
Town Hall's classical-music series kicks off its 2011-12 season with a special two-night performance destined to become a classic itself: TownMusic artistic director Joshua Roman, former principal cellist with the Seattle Symphony, performs all six Bach Cello Suites in a special two-part concert (with a dinner break in between). J.S. Bach wrote his rich and varied Six Suites for solo cello circa 1717-23, whereupon they lay dormant until the early 20th century. No significant works for solo cello were composed until Pablo Casals rediscovered the Bach Suites and helped propel them to their position among the world's most cherished music. (You might recall that Roman's 2007 Town Hall debut featured Bach's extraordinary and extraordinarily demanding Sixth Suite.) There will be a dinner break in the performance, with the second half resuming at 7:30 pm.
