TJBS Presents "Sessions at Steinway" w/ Roland Barber
The Tennessee Jazz Blues Society and Steinway Piano Gallery of Nashville announce the next installment of the new interview/performance series, Sessions at Steinway. The event takes place Saturday, August 1, 1:30 pm at the Steinway Piano Gallery of Nashville and features trombonist Roland Barber.
The new series combines interview and performance, featuring guest hosts and artists whose work enriches Music City's jazz and blues scenes.
Sessions at Steinway is modeled after the award-winning series Inside the Actor's Studio, and was conceived by saxophonist and TJBS Vice-President, Rahsaan Barber. It offers audiences the rare chance to hear unique and personal accounts of life both on and away from the stage. The "sessions" will include short performances and a Q&A segment for audience interaction.
The next performance in the series will take place Saturday, August 1 at 1:30 pm at the Steinway Piano Gallery, 4285 Sidco Drive, Nashville, TN 37204.
Roland Barber has performed with an impressively diverse and world class list of musicians, including Aretha Franklin, Victor Wooten, Christian McBride, the Grammy-Award-Winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Take 6, Lauryn Hill, Stefon Harris, Manny Oquendo y Libre, Chaka Khan, Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the NBC Saturday Night Live Band. Roland has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Blue Note, Lincoln Center, the Copacabana, and Madison Square Garden. He has also appeared on television, including MTV's "Making the Band".
Roland is also quite active as a teacher and educator of musicians from all walks of life. He has taught private study of trombone, jazz history, big band, and jazz improvisation in Manhattan School of Music's Pre-College Program for the NYC area's talented youngsters. Roland proudly teaches Nashville's youth as a part of the Nashville Symphony's "One Note, One Neighborhood" program - a partnership between the Nashville Symphony and W. O. Smith Community School of Music - and he is also on faculty here at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Also, Roland has presented master classes, lessons and lectures to audiences from the very young to high school and collegiate levels.
Roland Barber is also an esteemed composer and arranger. He was awarded a New Works Jazz Grant from Chamber Music America, which led to the writing and Lincoln Center premier of his suite, "Songs of the Village", performed by his quintet.
Tickets will be $10 for TJBS members and $15 for non-members. Student tickets are $10. Tickets will be available at the door and online.
