Gary Gibson & Reuel Lubag Trio
Gary Gibson is known internationally as a performer and composer of progressive music for the steel pan, and one of only a handful of musicians successfully incorporating it into more traditional music environments. His advocacy for the steel pan balances a healthy respect for its origins in Trinidad with its instrumental potential well outside its Caribbean identity. A percussionist since the age of five, his musical experience is broad, including work as the drummer/ percussionist at Seattle's 5th Avenue orchestra, film score recording as a section percussionist with Seattle Symphony musicians, jazz performances on drumset and vibraphone, producer and recording artist. He is on the music faculty at Cornish College of the Arts, and continues as a music educator in workshops and clinics at college programs throughout the U.S. His website is www.twotreesmusic.com. For this concert, Gary will be accompanied by the Reuel Lubag Trio (Reuel Lubag, piano), with whom Gary has recently recorded numerous jazz standards for an upcoming CD. The concert will show the versatility of the instrument, and its musical capabilities both within the expected Caribbean genres as well as jazz, classical, and other music styles.
