Made in Brooklyn Tours are guided walking tours that celebrate the creativity, ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of Brooklynites past and present. They tell the story of Brooklyn's industrial revolution and its current resurgence.
On Made in Brooklyn Tours the stars of the show are the people who make things. In Red Hook we may visit the makers of wine, glass, art, furniture, metal works and more depending on their availability. Each tour is a unique experience as no two tours are the same!
The star of this special Makin' History in Red Hook Tour is bona fide local historian John Burkard. We'll see who's makin' it in the neighborhood of Red Hook on our way to the impressive 19th Century Visitation Church where Mr. Burkard will tell the story of the church and Red Hook's significance in our country's history. So come with me, a native Brooklynite and licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide. "See who's makin' it in Brooklyn" and lets make history together!
Added Bonus for visitors from Manhattan! Meet me inside the Wall St./Pier 11 Ferry Terminal at 12:45 PM. We'll take the FREE! Ferry bound for Red Hook through Buttermilk Channel and get a glimpse of Brooklyn's working waterfront.
John Burkard John Burkard has been exposing Red Hook's history for nearly twenty years. His many accomplishments include establishing the first annual Fort Defiance Day in commemoration of the Revolutionary War Fort based in Red Hook credited with safeguarding George Washington's troops during the evacuation of Brooklyn following the Battle of Long Island. He has received the first National Community Service Award by the Brooklyn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a key figure in the formation of the only Heritage Trail in New York City (in Red Hook). Borough President Marty Markowitz recently presented Mr. Burkard with a Proclamation in appreciation of his work.
Mr. Burkard writes a monthly column for the Red Hook Star Review and you may read his stories on the web at The South Brooklyn Network and The History Box. He is a member of the Red Hook Memorial Post 5195 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Korean Veterans Association.
Visitation Church The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established in 1854 to serve the Irish and Italian dock and factory workers in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. The first church was located on Ewen and Van Brunt Streets and was dedicated on October 29, 1855 by Bishop Loughlin. A second church, built of gray stone and measuring 175 feet long by 60 feet wide, was erected in 1878, but was destroyed by fire on July 12, 1896. The present Gothic church was built in 1896 on Richards Street between Verona and Visitation Streets, and is across the street from Coffey Park.
Additional Details Made in Brooklyn Tours have a Made in Brooklyn theme. No two tours - even of the same neighborhood - are alike. Each is a unique experience! We make several scheduled stops moving at a leisurely pace. Depending on how the group feels, we may go over the posted end time. You're encouraged to return to your favorite stops after the tour to shop, eat or drink.
If you want a tour about Brooklyn's cultural diversity, important literary and political figures; its architecture and food these tours are NOT for you! Strictly speaking, these are NOT food or beverage tours though there may be tasting opportunities.
Tours are designed with starting points that are easy to reach by public transportation or ferry. Please arrive about ten minutes early and use the restroom before we start. These are walking tours and we'll be outside much of the time. Dress appropriately for the weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a bottle of water and don't forget your camera! Note: These tours are designed for adults.
