Co-presented with Dolce Suono and First Baptist Church, Choral Arts presents the Philadelphia revival of Gian Carlo Menotti's beloved "children's opera" "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on Sunday, December 4th at First Baptist Church. This is a revival of a tradition of performing Amahl and the Night Visitors at historic First Baptist Church at 17th and Sansom Streets, where it was later regularly recorded for television in the 1950s and 1960s. Originally conceived for television Amahl tells the story of three kings on their way to Bethlehem where they encounter a poor widow and her crippled yet mischievous son. The story is told through the eyes of a child living at the time of Christ and is a wonderful family program for the Holidays. Despite the work's absence from the Philadelphia concert season for many years, it remains one of the most performed operas in the United States. Our revival marks the centennial of Menotti's birth and the 60th Anniversary of the premiere of Amahl. The program will be complemented by seasonal Judeo-Baroque and Sephardic music by Salamone Rossi and Ralf Vaughan Williams.
