"A memoir is information gathered in search of illumination." Francine du Plessix Gray Author, THEM: A Memoir of Parents Now a St. Pete local, New York transplant Barbara Riddle will share her tips for finding focus and momentum in writing your memoir, whether you are just starting or have piles of scribbled notes that seem overwhelming. She will provide a reading list of inspiring memoirs to show you the range of styles and purposes that others have brought to the task. *Some questions to consider before the first class: For whom are you writing? Is there a particular question you seek the answer to as you write? Do you want to self-publish or find an agent? What qualifies you to do this particular memoir? Do you have any kind of social media platform? What's the difference between a memoir and an autobiographical novel? What about reactions from family members? About the Instructor: A New York native, Barbara has lived in Portland OR, Boston, San Francisco, London and Prague. She holds a BA from Reed College and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University. Her first novel, The Girl Pretending to Read Rilke, was called "sharply funny" by Barbara Ehrenreich. Her Greenwich Village memoir-in-progress was singled out for praise by Les Standiford at Writers in Paradise; her second novel is almost finished! www.girlpretending.com www.talesfromagreenwichvillagegirlhood.blogspot.com/
