On October 7th and 8th, Conduit Dance presents an adventurous evening of works by three emerging female choreographers from the Pacific Northwest: Seattle's Shannon Stewart and Allie Hankins, and Portland's Lucy Yim.
Shannon Stewart and Adam Sekular's The Third Floor explores the idea that memory loss as it is in people, is an essential part of dissociating identities in buildings and neighborhoods. Made in response to the abandoned 1928 Publix Hotel in the International District of Seattle, Shannon and Adam intuitively responded to the history, environment and architecture of the hotel. In crafting the piece as a film and live performance, they focused on approaching choreography through the discipline of film editing and vice versa. The Third Floor is part of a suite of work called the memory (loss) bank, which is also the name of a Seattle Storefront where Shannon and Adam will have a residency this fall. The memory (loss) bank is made possible with support from Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 4Culture, and the mOuth (Portland).
Song & Dance is an improvised duet between Portland choreographer Lucy Yim and musician Jean Paul Jenkins. This work hones in on the texture and resonance of sound that exists between bodies and space and moments in time. It grows out of the exploration of folk vernacular, seeking to gather its own language through a process of assimilation and reinterpretation. It is a work in process that will be performed again in fall of 2012.
Like a Sun That Pours Forth Light but Never Warmth unfolds against a backdrop of gold-bathed muscle and lurid color. Sourcing pivotal moments from Vaslav Nijinsky's life and dance history, Allie Hankins constructs an amalgamation of herself and several of Nijinsky's most poignant roles. Steering imitation into the realm of transformation and self-discovery, she confronts isolation, desire, and movement's capacity to engender lust, repugnance, confusion and elation.
