"Much Ado About Nothing" by William Shakespeare
Bare Theatre celebrates its 10th year and returns to Raleigh with one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies, originally performed by the company in 2001.
Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy about love and deception, with one of the greatest love/hate relationships in literature, between Beatrice and Benedick. The two battle wits as friends and family try to trick them into loving each other. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John plots to tear apart the impending marriage of young lovers Claudio and Hero, as the dimwitted constable Dogberry and his crew of bumbling night watchmen attempt to save the day.
This time out Much Ado goes steampunk! Messina, Italy gets a Victorian sci-fi makeover (think Jules Verne or H. G. Wells). Audience members are encouraged to wear steampunk attire. Bare Theatre Managing Director G. Todd Buker directs, with costumes by David Serxner and Abigail Harrington, physical direction by Heather J. Strickland and Jason Bailey, and videography by Jason Bailey and Patrick Campbell.
Bare Theatre has continued to receive critical acclaim, with "Burying Barbie" being recognized in The Independent's Best of 2010 for Best Ensemble, Best Director, and Best Production. Bare Theatre's production of Twelfth Night in 2007 was named one of the year's Ten Best shows by the News & Observer. Bare Theatre is known for its minimalist, high-energy, physical approach to the works of Shakespeare.
