Block by Block incorporates dance, mixed-media, live music - mixing beatboxing, spoken word movement, battles and more, along with projected visuals created by acclaimed visual artists Favianna Rodriguez and Evan Bissell creating an incredibly rich tapestry of performance that's not to be missed! Audiences will be taken on a journey, quite literally, through the de Young Museum as they follow performances from the many artists, dancers, and collaborators. Starting from near the murals, audiences will be engaged as the performance takes them to Wilsey Court, through the first floor and down into the Koret Auditorium as they enjoy choreographed, immediate, improvised and purposeful performances from members of Campo Santo and Felonious including Brian Rivera, Carlos Aguirre, Keith Pinto, Tommy Shepherd and Dan Wolf; Susie Lundy and Crew; Nicole Klaymoon and the Embodiment Project; DJ Wonway (Juan Amador); and the Campo Santo Street Team actors Ricky Saenz, Christine Jamlig, and Kelly Strickland; framed by the visual artworks of Evan Bissell, Favianna Rodriguez, and Ricardo Richey and Campo Santo designers Alejandro Acosta and Tanya Orellana. The performances will utilize the immediacy of the space in the de Young and allow the surroundings to help inspire and inform the movement of the dancers and the collective of participating artists and performers. This piece allows the artists to interact with audiences in a new way and invite them into the process, the landscape, the world that is being created through the performance. As the production moves through the museum, audiences will get led into the Koret Auditorium for the main piece, Block by Block. This piece will bring together a diverse mix of artists all working in the evolving aesthetics of theatre that deftly mixes live music and movement into theatre texts.
This series launches new projects that will come from Intersection and Campo Santo in the coming seasons with Dennis Kim, the Living Word Project, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Richard Montoya, Luis Alfaro, Chinaka Hodge, Jessica Hagedorn, Denis Johnson, California Shakespeare Theater, and more.
