SUBHUMAN: True Tales From Beneath The Sea
The performance features Ed Holmes and his true stories of adventures as a mechanic aboard a diesel submarine in the Pacific Ocean. From a foghorn'd hallucination on the shore of Lake Erie, to alarm bells beneath the Pacific Ocean, this salty tale of danger, discovery and destiny aboard a diesel submarine as told by the Navy veteran and long time Bay Area performer.
Ed Holmes has performed and taught physical theater in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 40 years. After his seven-year hitch in the Navy as a marine mechanic on the USS TIRU and the USS ASPRO, he attended college on the GI bill. At Laney Junior College in Oakland he fell, quite by accident, into theater. Cal State Hayward gave him a BA in Theater and Mills College in Oakland gave him a MA in dance.
Ed has performed with the Berkeley Mime Troupe (yes, that kind of mime); I Fratelli Bologna (commedia del arte); Antenna Theater (experimental/mask); the SF Opera; and the Oakland Symphony. For the past 25 years Ed has performed with the Obie and Tony award winning San Fransisco Mime Troupe (no, not that kind of mime) as a collective member, actor and director.
He has also appeared in the movies The Right Stuff, Howard the Duck, Golden Gate, Monkeybone, Valley of the Hearts Delight and on the TV series "Rainbows End," a sign language show for deaf children. For seven years Ed toured local schools with a one man lecture demo on the History of Clowns and Mimes. In 2006, Ed collaborated with Theater RAB in Freiburg Germany on a two-person comedy about climate change, "The Tip of the Iceberg."
Ed has taught physical theater at Cal State Hayward, Mills College, American Conservatory Theater, the SF Mime Troupe summer workshops, numerous colleges and high schools and to computer animators at Sony and Dreamworks in Los Angeles.
Every April First since 1979, Ed instigates and leads the annual St. Stupid's Day Parade through the financial district as part of his DIY religion..the First Church of the Last Laugh. 'Subhuman' has been performed in bars and VFW halls all over Northern California. Originally from Cleveland Ohio, Ed now lives in Berkeley California.
Rob Hurwitt, SF Chronicle "Ed Holmes is a local treasure"

Chicken John, Odeon bar "..the most compelling thing I have seen in years. No ego, no pretentious fantasy.. just the real deal, the' how' it was ...and it makes you warm and fuzzy inside"
