IVAN THE TERRIBLE 1 + 2
Sunday, October 16 at 12:30pm IVAN THE TERRIBLE
Produced as the German army ploughed towards Moscow, Eisenstein's film is an unforgettable portrait of the ruthless tsar (Nikolai Cherkasov) who united Russia. Driven by an amazing score by Sergei Prokofiev, Ivan the Terrible 1 & 2 features some of Eisenstein's most dazzling filmmaking. Stalin loved the first film's dramatic story of a powerful leader overcoming all opposition to create the Russian nation, but the second film's vision of a power-crazed dictator who uses his secret police to terrorize and murder his opponents cut a little too close to home, and was banned until 1958. (Russia, Pt. 1: 1944, 103 min., b/w / Pt. 2: 1944-58, 88 min., b/w & color / 35mm)
