SCMS Presents the Baroque Festival - French Grand Motets
Join the FPC Chorale and St. Cecilia orchestra as they trace the history of the Grand Motet in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The earliest grand motets were written for the King's private devotions at the Chapelle Royale. Later, the genre was transformed into grand spectacles for Paris's concert-going elite at the Concert Spirituel. Hailed at times for their depth of religious expression and panned at others for their secularizing influencefor creating spectacle for spectacle's sakethe Grand Motets stand today as one of France's greatest contributions to Baroque music. Featuring motets by Henri Du Mont, Michel Richard Delalande, and Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville.
