A performance by Latin jazz flutist and vocalist Marti Walker will lead off Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church's inaugural 2005-2006 concert series--Orange Coast Concerts --on Saturday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m.
From MartiWalker.com: "Like whispers from another universe...like a deep, throaty call from the center of the earth...the voice of this dynamic songstress will capture your heart and soul - from the first note, to the last. ... Marti's songs will take you on an unforgettable journey - from evocative, sophisticated melodies that seem to float on air, to down-to-earth, sometimes comical musings about life and love, set to a sweet, simple, hummable tune."
Walker's performance will feature a blending of contemporary and traditional jazz and Latin music, weaving influences of pop, folk and world music. A resident of Long Beach, Walker grew up in Pennsylvania. Following in her jazz trombonist father's footsteps, she became a jazz studies major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and continued her studies at Berklee College of Music.
After college, Walker spent over three years in the Canary Islands in Spain, where she was intensely exposed to a new world of Latin music. She was the first non-Canarian to perform in the popular Canarian folklore ensemble "Mestisay." She also toured and performed locally with musicians from Cuba, Europe and South America. Walker's training included master classes with Jorge Pardo, saxophonist and flutist for the legendary Paco de Lucia. During this time, she made appearances on a number of national Spanish television shows, performed at the World Fair in Seville and was a special guest soloist at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival. Here in the United States she has recorded with X-Tribe (Etherean Music) and has performed regularly with Larisa Stow, Joselyn and Wild Roots.
