YOUNG IRELAND: EMISSARIES FROM A NEW LITERARY RENAISSANCE
The island that gave birth to Yeats, Joyce, Shaw, Wilde, Binchy, and countless other stars in the literary firmament now boasts a literary renaissance among the young. Appearing at Litquake for the first time will be five rising stars from the Emerald Isle, doing readings and a panel discussion on what it means to carry the torch for a rich literary heritage. Chris Binchy has written four novels. "The Very Man" was shortlisted for Irish Novel of the Year in 2003. In 2010, "Five Days Apart" was published by Harper Collins in the U.S. He lives in Dublin. John Butler's first novel "The Tenderloin" was published by Picador in June 2011. He also writes and directs for television and film, including the TV sketch show, "Your Bad Self." He currently lives in London.
Lucy Caldwell was born in Belfast in 1981. She is an award-winning playwright and novelist, author of the plays Leaves, Guardians, and Notes to Future Self, and the novels "Where They Were Missed" and the critically-acclaimed "The Meeting Point." lucycaldwell.com
Claire Kilroy is author of "All Summer" (2003), "Tenderwire" (2006), and "All Names Have Been Changed" (2009). "Hotel Deauville" will be published next year. She was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2004. Belinda McKeon writes for The Irish Times and The Paris Review, Irish Pages and elsewhere. Her debut novel, "Solace," was published in May by Scribner and named an Outstanding Debut of 2011 by Kirkus.
