Food & Folklore "Family Reunions"
Eatonville Restaurant's Food & Folklore series celebrates the "family reunion" Wednesday, August 24 at 6:30 PM. Traditionally, from August through October family and friends gather for reunions, homecomings, and revivals. For African Americans, these occasions bring the generations together to mark milestones, set a path for the future, and discover or rediscover one's roots. Food is often the conduit in telling the story of a family's journey through history.
Gina Paige, co-founder and president of AfricanAncestry.com is the guest speaker for the Food & Folkore event. Paige and Dr. Rick Kittles founded AfricanAncestry.com to enable people of African decent to trace their ancestry back to their African country of origin by analyzing their DNA. Dr. Henry Louis Gates used AfricanAncestry.com's DNA testing for his PBS mini series "African American Lives" (parts 1 and 2). African Ancestry has traced the DNA of many notable African Americans including Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, Isaiah Washington, Forrest Whitaker, Kimberly Elise and many more.
The "Family Reunion" Food & Folklore event includes a prix fixe buffet "family style" dinner menu including coconut cake dessert inspired by Decoyise Brown's (Waldorf, MD) winning cake from the 2011 Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Coconut Cake Challenge.
