Firebird Dance Theatre: The Best of 20
In 1991, Firebird Dance known then as the Lysaya Dance School was born. Founded by world-renowned teacher and choreographer Roza Lysaya, Firebird began as a small class of 6 students at the Palo Alto JCC, focusing on traditional folk dances from Russia and around the world. Honoring the memory of founder and original artistic director, Lotta Lysaya-Barton, her daughter and current Firebird director, has brought annual benefit Firebird concerts to the Schultz Cultural Hall. Part children's dance recital, part professional-level concert, a performance showcases inventive, complex, and well-executed choreography based on traditional Ukrainian, Russian, Armenian, Moldavian, Argentinean, French, Latin and Gypsy steps. Burton has labeled what has become Firebird's signature style as "modern folk," or "contemporary folk." "It's important to keep traditions, because it's a good way for people to communicate their different cultures. But you need to be up-to-date to attract new generations."
