Winner of Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2010, brothers Daniel and Diego Vega Vidal's first feature film shows an unlikely collection of down-and-out Peruvians thrown by chance into a quirky familial arrangement. When a baby shows up in pawnbroker Clemente's apartment, he engages his religious neighbor, Sofia, to take care of the child while he goes off in search of the mother, a prostitute at his regular brothel. With a bare-bones script and minimalist style, the Vidal brothers tell a story of urban loneliness and unexpected communities; of the tiny miracles that sometimes show up after years of unanswered prayers; and of the relationship forged out of necessity that can become as meaningful as they are surprising.
