Author Rita Golden Gelman wrote the inspiring book, Tales of a Female Nomad, chronicling 15 years of her travel & her life. Last year, Rita published a new book, "Female Nomad & Friends: Tales of Breaking Free & Breaking Bread Around the World". An anthology of travel stories written by Rita, friends and readers, along with accompanying recipes. We are honored, that Rita has agreed to join us for this very special community kitchen where we will cook recipes from her new book and share in her stories
Intrigued, but not familiar with Rita's work? Here's a few tidbits about her life and her work:
* Rita has no address and few possessions - she has lived as a nomad for over 25 years. Living and traveling in mostly developing nations * Rita has authored 70 children's books and two books on her life as a nomad * Rita has 4 simple rules: smile alot, talk to everyone, accept all invitations & eat everything that is offered * Rita started her journey at the age of 48, today she is 74 years old * Rita went parasailing at the age of 72
Want to learn more? Check out her website at http://www.ritagoldengelman.com/.
We'll be making a few of Rita's favorites: ** Larb Gai (an excellent Thai Chicken appetizer) ** Vegetarian Dolmades (rice stuffed grape leaves) ** Crema Poblano Mistongo (a creamy corn soup) ** Roasted Red Pepper Casserole ** Ho Mok (Thai custard with fish)
In addition to sharing stories of the food we will be preparing, her adventures & travels; Rita will be reading from her children's books so bring along the kids for this not to be missed event! Rita will also have copies of her two popular Nomad books available for purchase and of course, autograph. For convenience, you may purchase them here with your ticket at special rates. Just a reminder that author royalties from Female Nomad & Friends are funding scholarships for slum kids in New Delhi, India to attend vocational school.
And, finally the details. Wallingford Community Kitchen will be meeting on Saturday, August 20th starting at 5:00pm. As always, this will be at our host site, the Wallingford COMMUNITY Senior Center (WCSC), 4649 Sunnyside Ave N, Room 140 Seattle, WA.
We will cook as a community and then enjoy the bounties of our labor by sitting down to share a meal. Participation requires pre-registration and a fee of $9.99 to cover the cost of ingredients and the facilities. Pre-sales of books are available in the registration. For you late registrants, - entrance will be $25 at-the-door - this helps us to better plan our menu and control costs. Please make sure to email the coordinator to ensure that there is space if you plan to be a last minute attendee. We are also asking those that can, to please donate a bit extra - proceeds will be passed along to Rita's fundraising efforts for the kids in New Dehli. We will have a limited number of reduced fee tickets available - please email the coordinator for a password.
Tickets may be purchased here or you can mail or drop a check payable to: Wallingford COMMUNITY Senior Center **Please indicate the names of all people attending**
Wallingford COMMUNITY Senior Center Attn: Wallingford Community Kitchen 4649 Sunnyside Ave N, Room 140 Seattle, WA 98103
We also ask that all participants bring an appetizer, side dish, dessert or drink to share with the group (please no bread products as we receive those by donation).
Participation in these events requires a certain level of commitment; we are cooking as a community and that includes work setting the room, cleaning up and of course the fun stuff of cooking and eating. We ask that all participants do their best to arrive by our start time of 5:00pm. If you are new to attending, you may want to arrive a few minutes early to find the bathrooms, stash you personal items and get comfortable with the set-up. If for whatever reason you cannot arrive on-time, please plan to stay with us to the end of the night to help with clean-up. Ideally we will try and wrap up by 8:30 pm - the ability to do this truly depends on each and every one of you and your commitment to step up and proactively keep us clean throughout the event.
As always, bring along your appetite and some containers for any leftovers. The WCSC is always in need of extra containers, please bring along your gently used and clean plastic yogurt, sour cream, salsa, etc. containers to contribute. A quick reminder, if you are ill, we ask that you use your good judgment; always remember to wash your hands carefully when handling food and especially after sneezing or blowing your nose.
Thanks & looking forward to seeing all of you there!
