Hound of the Baskervilles
The world premiere City Lit adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, will begin previews at City Lit Theater on Friday, August 31 and open for the press on Monday, September 3.  The production, adapted by Terry McCabe and directed by  Kevin Theis, runs through October 14.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is by general consent the greatest of all the Sherlock Holmes adventures.  It revolves around the ancient curse of the Baskerville family -a spectral hound that is said to haunt the clan.  Now Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead in circumstances that suggest the hounds presence, and Holmes is asked to save the new heir, Sir Henry Baskerville,  from his eerie legacy.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a number of historical novels that he himself greatly preferred, but is best remembered for having created Sherlock Holmes, who ranks with Robinson Crusoe and Hamlet among the most universally known characters in English literature.  All in all, Conan Doyle published four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes, in a broken series stretching from 1887 to 1927.

City Lits production will star Don Bender as Sherlock Holmes and Will Schutz as Dr. Watson, both reprising their roles from City Lits 2006 hit Holmes and Watson, for which McCabes adaptation received a Jeff Citation nomination.  The rest of the Hound cast is Jerry Bloom, Bill Brennan, Chris Cantelmi, Elise Kauzlaric, George Seegebrecht, Christopher M. Walsh and Philip Winston.  The design team is Grant Sabin (set),  Branimira Ivanova (costumes), ,  Sean Mallary (lighting) and  Robert Steel (sound).    This was Jeff-nominated for directing City Lits 2001 Jeeves and the Mating Season and his adaptation of the Holmes novel The Sign of Four was acclaimed in its premiere at Apple Tree Theatre in 2003.

The Hound of the Baskervilles will play Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 3:00 PM, August 31 through October 14.  Press opening is Monday, September 3 at 7:00 PM.  Ticket prices are $18 for previews and $25 after opening.  Discounts are available for seniors, students and groups of ten or more.  Tickets can be reserved by going to www.citylit.org or by calling (773) 293-3682.
