The How and the Why
by Sarah Treem, directed by Lee Mikeska Gardner
More than science is at stake when two women, of different generations, clash over evolutionary biology and what it means to be female. Emotion and intellect guide their journey through the murky waters of family, love, and truth on the eve of a competitive conference. Despite conflicting research, these two brilliant individuals must find the middle ground between research and relationships. "The How and the Why", a new play by the writer of HBO's "In Treatment", is a thrilling and provocative exploration of sex and gender, family and biology, nurture and nature.

Question: |
Is this play suitable for a 15 year old? |
Answer: |
It's difficult to make judgement calls like this. I would have let my 15-year olds see this play. However, there is some swearing and since the subject includes evolutionary biology there is some discussion of reproduction in common terms. If you are uncomfortable with that, then the answer would be no. But the exciting aspect of the play is all of the issues raised. The dialog is brilliant. Watching the dance between the two women as they search for truth and defend and explain themselves opens lots of opportunities to think and to question. I would recommend it. I hope this helps and thanks for asking. |
