Film/Discussion/Book signing/Reception
One of the many things that made Saturday Night Live so special in its early years and beyond was the short films of Tom Schiller. Schiller made his feature filmmaking debut with this fantastic retro-futuristic fantasy. Adam (Zach Galligan) dreams of becoming an artist. On returning to his relatives in Manhattan, he finds that the Port Authority has taken control of the city, and is forced to work in a menial job in the Holland Tunnel under a trigger-happy boss (Dan Aykroyd). His kindness to a tramp leads him to be taken into an underground network where he discovers that the city's tramps are controlling the destiny of the world. They instruct him to travel to the moon on a mission to spread peace and find his true love. Along the way he encounters a hysterical Bill Murray as the entertainment director of a bus to the moon. Incorporating clips from a number of classic silent films, Nothing Lasts Forever also features a unique supporting cast, including Sam Jaffe, Eddie Fisher, Lawrence Tierney, Imogene Coca, and Larry "Bud" Melman. USA, 1984, 82 min., b/w and color
