MIKE EVIN / BEAU DIXON - THE GARNET (Peterborough, ON)
MIKE EVIN
"A rarity a pop composer who isn't afraid to use his wit or to wear his heart for all to hear." CBC Radio
"Mike Evin taps into what motivates people, and champions the search for happiness." - Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies)
The joyous spirit of Canadian piano-pop songwriter Mike Evin pulses through his music, uplifting and soulful. Drawing from influences as varied as Ben Folds and Michael Jackson, Evin weaves hook-laden melodies, playful vocals, and driving grooves to create danceable pop gems and hopeful musings on life and love.
Mike is touring his new album, Life as a Lover, which will be released on August 28. The concert will feature Mike on piano/guitar/vocals and Ian MacKay (Basia Bulat) on drums/percussion/vocals.
BEAU DIXON
"Beau Dixon goes old-school with his new collection From Here To East City. Dixon comes off sounding very confident, as he should. The songs are well written, well performed and filled with catchy hooks and melodies. This disc has a very live feel, which benefits the overall sound a great deal. Genre jumping, Dixon goes straight from Motown to soul to Chicago blues with nary a flinch. Dixon's voice is sweet, soulful and assured.
Typical of the wide array of styles showcased on this collection, is the vast change from the sweet vibe of 'Livin' Up Town', to the mellow tune which follows. 'Let's Start Over' has adult oriented radio written all over it. Even on sugar-sweet tunes like this one, Dixon still manages to keep the sound grounded and real. There is a genuine fun-time feel to the songs found on From Here To East City. Each song forms a nice collaboration between instrumentation and a chorus of vocals. The blend of the two is reason to rejoice. 'Call Me Back' features a melody that carries a genuine Island feel.
Dixon's sound might best be likened to the recent success of similar-minded artist Remy Shand. Some of the vibes are similar, and both share a passion for soulful sounds, though Dixon seems to go one step further by sometimes mixing in a world-beat feel." Jeff Macklin, The Examiner
