Master Bass Player STU HAMM is headed to the Rear Window stage for a solo performance of his original compositions. This is, without a doubt, going to be a fabulous evening with a world renown bassist in an intimate and very personal Listening Venue.
From "For Bass Players Only" ... Bassist/composer extraordinaire Stuart Hamm never seems to run out of new ideas, his creative juices always flowing. Case in point: his brand new release, The Book of Lies, a beautiful compilation of four full-band tracks surrounding a "suite" for unaccompanied bass.
The ever-humble Stu attributes much of the quality of the album to the musicians with whom he surrounded himself, including John Mader, Chester Thompson, Jason Harrison Smith, Carl Verheyen, Lorn Leber, Mitchell Forman, Phil Naish, Karl Theobald and Anna Kristina. "On this CD," Stu tells FBPO, "I decided to stretch my writing chops and do the best things a composer can do: hire great musicians and let them play!" The title tune, a funky, quasi-hip-hop piece, "is a groove I have had in my back pocket for a while," says Stu, crediting Mader and Leber for coming up with "brilliant parts to put it over the top."
Shifting gears, "Back to Shabalalla" is Stu's tribute to South Africa. He describes the track as "an homage to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the great music of Soweto that my father turned me on to in the early '80s after he spent some time in South Africa."
At the core of the album is a suite of seven short pieces for unaccompanied bass, covering a wide range of the instrument's capabilities. Titles include "Open Note Aria," "Chordally Yours," "Slap Happy" and "Just A Blues." Dubbing it "Le Petite Suite for Solo Bass," Stu explains that, despite the fact that solo bass is a "legitimate musical genre," the availability of recorded examples that illustrate that legitimacy seems lacking. "There really is not a lot of published (solo bass) work for young bass players to draw from. Each piece uses a different technique to make the music interesting."
You cannot imagine what an incredible experience this will be with one of the world's greatest bass player's ... ever!
