How Does The River Work?
Long known as a port town, Portland's location on the Willamette River is central to the vitality of the city. Join us for a Saturday bus ride to learn more about the past, present and future of Oregon's working waterfront.
The tour will begin by visiting the Port of Portland, where staff will provide an overview of the Port's scope of operations and its economic impact on area businesses. Staff will jump aboard the bus for a guided tour of Terminal 6, an area typically closed to the public due to federal security regulations. We'll drive among towering 16-story cranes and multicolored containers, while learning about the city's import and export economy.
The bus will then head to the Port of Vancouver (WA) to learn about the differences of the neighboring city's port. In addition to touring their new industrial and maritime facilities, we'll learn about Vancouver's rail system expansion, plans for economic growth and commitment to environmental stewardship.
The tour will end on the East side Esplanade where Paul Gribbon, manager of the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services CSO Tunnel Program, or "Big Pipe Project. Paul will discuss the science, history and completion of the project, Portland's effort to de-couple grey water from raw sewage to avoid overflows in the Willamette.
