How Is Justice Served?
Criminal justice is often an invisible but important element of society. This walking tour aims to provide participants with a better understanding of the city's justice system.
We start at the Dill Pickle Club Headquarters at the Dekum Building--519 SW 3rd (3rd and Washington).
After a brief walk through to the Multnomah County Justice Center. We will meet with staff from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Department, who will give an insider's perspective of the intake and incarceration processes (participants will be required to complete a background check prior to entering the building).
Next we connect with Jason Renaud, spokesperson for the Mental Health Association of Portland (MHAP). Renaud will speak to police accountability and it's affect on city government, as well as MHAP's advocacy work.
The tour will conclude with Chris O'Connor, Attorney at Metropolitan Public Defender, who will be discussing how a criminal case proceeds through the Multnomah County Circuit Court and how public defenders are appointed. O'Connor, often an advocate for human rights and free speech, will be available to answer questions about how court procedure works and doesn't work.
