How Is the City Planned?
Portland is known worldwide as a city at the forefront of urban planning, but how did the city become known for its progressive policy and what are its current initiatives? Join us for a walking and public transit tour to meet with city experts and take in some of Portland's notable urban design sites.
We'll first meet with Alisa Kane, Green Building and Development Manager for the City of Portland, Bureau of Planning & Sustainability (BPS). She'll lead us on a walk through the Pearl District, where she'll discuss the neighborhood's planning and development strategies. Sites encompassed on the tour include LEED certified buildings, integrated affordable housing, multi-modal streetscapes, public parks and urban design details enacted to make the city more livable.
The group will then meet Rachael Duke, Manager of Operation and Partnerships at the recently-opened Bud Clark Commons. We'll tour the $47 million platinum LEED certified homeless shelter, housing 220 residents. Shelter staff will join us to speak to the community perspective of transitional housing.
The tour will conclude with a brief talk by Nicolas Starin, City Planner on the Central City Team and Historic Resources Program at BPS. Starin will outline the history of city planning and urban development, and conclude with remarks on the Portland Plan, a master plan for development in the city for the next 25 years.
