Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) that features an eclectic mix of comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. The show has been taking place for the past 6 years at El Rio in the Mission District, where SF comedian/Kung Pao Kosher Comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig began doing stand up in 1989. She began the show on her 20th anniversary of performing.
Featuring the return to comedy of Bridget Schwartz (of Josie's fame), who took a 10 year hiatus from comedy; SF native Yayne Abeba who's about to leave us for LA; visiting us from LA: Maria Shehata; newcomer to the El Rio stage: David Roth; and MC, Lisa Geduldig.
Yayne Abeba is a native San Franciscan of Ethiopian descent. She recently starred in her own one-hour TV special "Africa Laughs with Yayne Abeba" on the Africa Channel, which broadcasts throughout the US, the UK, and the Caribbean. Yayne began studying acting at the Jean Shelton Actor's Lab in 1995 and was bitten by the comedy bug four years later at The Luggage Store. Realizing that there was no cure, she accepted her fate and has since been touted as one of San Francisco's up and coming comedians. Her style is fresh, innovative, cutting edge and just damn funny. She won The 2002 Russian River Comedy Competition and competed in several SF International Comedy Competitions as well as the Seattle Comedy Competition.
Bridget Schwartz was a well-known San Francisco comic for many years (a Josie's favorite), and then she took a hiatus to do something else for a while. That "something else" turned into "nothing" so she decided to come back and tell us all about middle age. She has no new insights, but went out with 70 different men on okay Cupid just to see if any of them noticed she was wearing two different colored socks. She likes cats and hamsters, but not at the same time (sad story) has spent time in jail in Munich, Germany and has invented a now famous yoga pose called "downward facing Whore." Come see her fall apart on stage.
Maria Shehata is an Egyptian-American comedian and actress born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her unlikely blend of mid east and mid west gives her a point of view that is hilarious and unique while maintaining a distinct universality. Maria's stand up has been seen on Comedy Central's The Watch List, Just Like Us: The Movie, and Showtime's Bridging the Gap. Maria has been invited to perform in numerous comedy festivals, such as the New York Underground Comedy Festival, the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, The Los Angeles Middle Eastern Comedy Festival, and the San Luis Obispo Comedy Festival. With her universal appeal, she has performed all over the world including Palestine, Doha, and Paris. And for the US troops in Germany, Italy, Kosovo, Turkey and the Bahamas. Maria is one of six comedians featured in The Cradle of Comedy, a documentary on Middle Eastern comedians, set to air nationally in Australia. Currently, you can catch Maria on her weekly podcast, Little Ethnic Girls, on RadioTitans.com. www.mariashehata.com
David Roth has performed in the Bay Area, LA, and NYC at iconic venues like Cobb's and The Purple Onion. He has written two Super Bowl commercials and worked with comedy legends like Bob Odenkirk, Larry Charles, and Jim Gaffigan.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 23rd year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
