Nonprofit Turnarounds: A Legal Perspective
This seminar will be a panel discussion with Nonprofit Consultant Jan Glick, and Attorneys Judith Andrews and Keelin Curran. This CLE provides a research-based perspective to help guide attorneys who work with struggling nonprofit organizations, specifically exploring the following three areas of law which are most applicable during turnarounds:
Governance: Board of directors governance problems that prevent sound decision making Employment law: Executive Director performance problems that place the organization's future at risk, and serious HR issues with other staff members Legal Structure: How three scenarios may be addressed following severe financial and operational problems: mergers, divestitures or closure/dissolution.
The seminar emphasizes methods attorneys can use to provide legal advice for nonprofit clients and/or organizations on whose boards of directors they may serve. Because legal issues often intersect with business and operational issues, this seminar provides a context for attorneys to be most prepared to advise their clients. The seminar will cover legal issues and solutions as well as providing information on where the organization can turn for related, non-legal guidance on issues that are closely related to legal processes, and would ideally, be dealt with simultaneously.
