Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents the Jacob Teichroew Quartet
The Jacob Teichroew Quartet draws from unusual sources to create fresh perspectives on jazz. Inspiration for their music comes from places as varied as the horn solo at the end of one of Strauss' "Four Last Songs," an antiquated olympic sport called "plunging for distance," or a fabricated clave rhythm. Regardless of the source material, the music is composed in a way that toys with conventional formal structures, while maintaining a sense of melody, arc, and momentum that engages the untrained ear as much as it flummoxes the trained ear.
Jacob Teichroew is a saxophonist, woodwind player, composer, bandleader, and music educator based in Brooklyn, New York. He studied classical saxophone with Steven Jordheim at Lawrence University, and jazz with Antonio Hart at Queens College. He attended the Banff International Jazz and Creative Music Workshop in 2013, where he studied with Vijay Iyer and many others. Jacob has performed throughout the United States, Canada, The Netherlands, Italy, and Uruguay.
His debut album, Tableaux, was released in 2013 on Fresh Sound/New Talent Records. "Hot House Jazz" wrote: "Saxophonist and composer Jacob Teichroew is a rare example of a jazz musician who evokes the tone and lyrical precision of a musician much older than himself. Teichroew's compositions juxtapose precisely crafted melodies and dynamic interplay within the ensemble"
In addition to performing as a sideman and a bandleader, Teichroew teaches music at KIPP Infinity Middle School in Manhattan. He maintains a studio of private students, and he has given clinics at Washington and Jefferson University in Pennsylvania, and at Jazz a la Calle in Mercedes, Uruguay.
