Nat Baldwin, Footings, Rick from Pile, GREEF
Nat Baldwin takes on the daunting task of utilizing the classical upright bass as the instrument of a solo singer-songwriter and demolishes it. Listen as he "sings" equally as expressively with the bow on the strings of his bass as with his voice.
Footings, from Peterborough, NH, is a new project of members of Redwing Blackbird, Death to Tyrants, and Bunny's a Swine.
Pile's music has a peculiar way of toying with your sense of nostalgia while simultaneously standing tall as completely unique and original, a feat not often accomplished. Pile's frontman and songwriter, Rick Maguire is now stepping up to do a rare solo performance - performing songs written for electric guitar (with its amplifier's volume turned all the way up) on an acoustic, without sacrificing any of the intensity and fury that comes with playing plugged in, with a full band.
GREEF is the crooning wail, the distorted (masterfully intentional) out-of-tune guitar, and warbling cassette tape player of local musican Pete Swegart. You've likely heard Pete's distinctive voice and playing style in Portland's favorite epic post-rock group Butcher Boy - this time see him perform in a much more stripped down, intimate and vulnerable manner.
