Science: Ian McAllister & Andrew Nikiforuk: Wolves, Beetles & a Pipeline
Ian McAllister's new book is called Following the Last Wild Wolves; Andrew Nikiforuk has written Empire of the Beetle. While wolves and beetles don't seem the most likely pairing, they each play a crucial role in our ecology as do the authors. Together, McAllister and Nikiforuk find common ground around Canada's Enbridge Pipeline and its impact on the pristine wilderness of northern British Columbia. McAllister addresses the beauty and ecology of the coast and forests and the threats of bitumen exports while Nikiforuk explores landscape changes triggered by climate change (oil consumption) and the second-largest insect invasion in North American history. Presented as part of Seattle Science Lectures, with Pacific Science Center and University Book Store. Series sponsored by Microsoft. Series media sponsorship provided by KPLU.
