Lecture Title: "Emerging Technologies in Orthopedics for Joint Resurfacing" Lecture Summary: Dr. Lane's talk addresses the ability to form a new articular surface for arthritic joints caused by traumatic injury in young patients. This procedure involves the use of technology in which cartilage cells are harvested from the patient, then differentiated to a lesser developed state and implanted back into the patient's joint surface. Dr. Lane will describe joint surface injuries and the treatment options for articular cartilage irregularity and will discuss the pros and cons of traditional treatments and different treatment options for regrowing joint surfaces, which include replacing the joint surface with use of a patient's own cells.
Dr. John Lane is a sports medicine specialist with expertise in arthroscopic repair of the shoulder, knee and more recently, the spine. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Michigan, in addition to his private practice, Dr. Lane holds a Clinical Instructor position at the University of California, San Diego, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at San Diego State University. An avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Lane also participated in Professional Minor League Baseball and college baseball, basketball, crew and rugby. Dr. Lane has researched and published articles on sports related injuries such as achilles tendon rupture, ACL injuries and spinal cord trauma.
