CHILDREN OF EDEN, Summer Musical 2011!
Before Wicked: Stephen Schwartz's Favorite Musical! (PHOTOS ON SMUGMUG:http://neighborhoodchurch.smugmug.com) Neighborhood Church Presents CHILDREN OF EDEN. The biblical book of Genesis has fascinated and inspired the world for thousands of years with its account of the origins of the universe, the creation of humankind, and the lives, loves and family intrigues of Adam, Eve, Abraham, and Noah. Stephen Schwartz, known for his work on blockbuster Broadway musicals such as Wicked and Godspell, became fascinated with the book of Genesis, seeing it as the story of families broken and redeemed. In the spirit of adventure, awe, and delight with which he experienced Genesis, Schwartz created a new musical called "Children of Eden" to bring this powerful ancient book to life. Children of Eden is the 2011 summer musical, a much loved community and family event, by Neighborhood Church of Castro Valley. Children of Eden offers five performances from August 12 to 20, and is a Broadway-style musical that features spectacular period sets, makeup and costumes, along with a full choir and live orchestra with a cast of well over a hundred actors, singers, dancers, and musicians.
Children of Eden is a powerful dramatic musical that embarks upon the unforgettable stories of Genesis and a show that works on many levels and touches a wide variety of people in many different places in their lives. The musical is based on the first nine-and-a-half chapters of the book of Genesis. Act I focuses on God, Adam, Eve, and Cain and Abel. Act II centers around God, Noah and his family, and the cataclysmic flood. The musical also reflects the challenges and blessings of relationships between fathers and their children and the generational legacies, both positive and negative, that impact our lives and ultimately impart grace, forgiveness, love and hope.
Musical numbers include "In Whatever Time We Have," a popular Schwartz song often performed at weddings. Other songs include "Let There Be," "The Naming," Lost in the Wilderness," "Children of Eden," Generations, "The Flood," and "In the Beginning."
Children of Eden is Stephen Schwartz's favorite of his own musicals. "I think the work of which I am most proud is Children of Eden, for several reasons. To begin with, I think it's my best score musically and there are more of the themes I return to over and over personal responsibility, intellectual independence, as well as overcoming family dysfunctions, it has become a viable and often performed piece that I know will live on after I'm gone." Schwartz has always intended for the show to be more than a pageant of spectacular effects; instead, he yearned for Children of Eden to be a story about families, how the problems and conflicts of one generation are handed on to the next and how the cycle can finally be broken and redeemed.
MUSIC & ARTS AT NEIGHBORHOOD: The yearly Summer Musical at Neighborhood Church is a much loved and anticipated summer family tradition. The music and arts legacy at Neighborhood Church stretches back to the 1930's in Oakland, California, where the church established a reputation as a center of cutting edge contemporary dramatic and musical performances. When Neighborhood Church moved to Castro Valley in 1969 to break ground on a new facility overlooking Interstate 580/Route 238, the auditorium was designed and constructed with stage production in mind and features a hydraulic orchestra pit, an extensive backstage, a seven story fly gallery (for backdrops), and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems.
