Doug Jeffords and Paula Rhae McDonald
Paula Rhae McDonald will team up with Doug Jeffords for a special evening of music on August 6 at 7:30pm at the Legal Tender in Lamy. Joining them will be Dave Devlin, Laura Leach and Pat Mahoney. The two will perform songs from their CDs Little Bird and West of the Pecos as well as a selection of duets. With influences and contributions ranging from country, R & B, folk-rock and Celtic, Jeffords' CD was recently named "Best Country CD" by the New Mexico Music Awards.
Paula Rhae McDonald was born in Abilene, Texas to a family full of musicians. "My fondest musical memories were at my grandparent's home in Burkburnett, Texas. They called it The Back Porch Orchestra."
After a childhood of singing, she went on to perform with various bands and eventually toured all over the U.S. with Doc Holiday and the Hole in the Wall Gang. In 1979, the band took an in-house job in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Mr. R's, and Paula Rhae performed there for several years, becoming a favorite of the locals and visitors to the area, many of whom would make a show a part of every return itinerary. But in 1984, she put full focus on raising her family there.
She had also developed a love and keen eye for Native American Art; and in 1989, she opened Kiva Fine Art gallery located in the famed historic El Centro building just steps from the plaza in downtown Santa Fe. The gallery is now internationally known and recognized for featuring some of the country's most noted Native American Indian artists and Western artists. Kiva was recently named one of Sante Fe's three galleries awarded Best of 2011 Artfest
But music never left Paula Rhae, and after a 26 year departure and in honor of her late husband's request that she do her own music again, she recorded Little Bird. The debut CD gives a great nod to the depth of her musical influences and experiences bringing country, western jazz swing and soulful spirit together through her strong honest vocals.
Little Bird is on Frogville Records ("Indie Folk, Rock & Alternative Country for people who love, think & do") and was produced by Bill Palmer (Frogville Records producer/engineer and member of Hundred Year Flood). It was recorded at the label's premier Sante Fe studio and features some of the area's top musicians.
McDonald wrote four of the eleven songs including the irresistible dance tune "Crazy as a June Bug; "My Friend Jim", a poignant personal tribute; the wistful "Snow-White Dove"; and "Baby Jesus Has His Eye on You", a loving faithful plea. It also includes a few of her favorite covers and other originals by some of her favorite songwriters such as Buddy Holly's "True Love Ways", "Ready for the Times to Get Better", and a nod to her Texas heritage, "Last Call at the Old Ponderosa".
Little Bird has been immediately well received with songs being played on radio and online radio. McDonald was a finalist at The New Mexico Music Awards in four categories including Best Vocal; Best Country CD; Religious/Gospel; and Jazz. And after years of offering some of the best of art and artisans through her gallery, Paula Rhae McDonald is now bringing her own art out into the world once again - singing, performing and coming full circle to her musical roots.
