Sganarelle or The Imaginary Cuckold
Moliere's sparkling classic comedy of errors in a lively new version for City Garage. In this wicked piece of satire on fidelity and honor, two couples mistakenly believe they have betrayed each other. The more they argue, scheme, plot, and attempt to revenge themselves, the more deeply they get entangled in their own delusions. And of course, in best Moliere fashion, when their fury and wounded vanity at last reaches a fever pitch, new complications make things even worse! A fast and furious romp of jilted lovers, deceived husbands, coniving wives, and devious young girls doing their very best to, in the end, do nothing but fool themselves.
"Frederique Michel and Charles Duncombe's world premiere translation/adaptation of the play, the first offering from City Garage in its new residency at Bergamot Station, preserves every soupcon of rich meaning and fun....As always, director Michel tackles the text with imaginative boldness." -- LA Times
"Style delights the eye from start to finish in this production of Moliere's skewering of circumstantial evidence. Frederique Michel and Charles Duncombe's new version in English retains the classical tone while including cheeky modern bits, and Michel's direction plays up Moliere's naughtiness." -- Backstage
"[Moliere's lusty farce],a new version translated and adapted by Frederique Michel and Charles Duncombe, includes plenty of deliciously ridiculous material about prideful men and jealous women....The standout performance comes from [Justin] Davanzo, whose every appearance onstage infuses the show with the high-octane quick-handedness it requires." -- LA Weekly
