ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Wednesday, August 10 at 7:30pm Lou Bunin's 1951 classic ALICE IN WONDERLAND Filming Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland was a longtime dream of animator Louis Bunin. Everything in the production was first rate: the cast for the live action who also provided the voices for the animated puppets included such stalwarts as Pamela Brown, Felix Aylmer, and Joyce Grenfell; the choreographer was the renowned Roland Petit; the director of photography was Claude Renoir; and one of the screenwriters was Albert Lewin (The Picture of Dorian Gray, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman). The film opens with a whimsically bizarre prologue with Charles Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll writing a letter to Queen Victoria complaining about the incessant tolling of a bell donated to Oxford by Charles II. His letter falls into the hands of Dean Liddell (the real Alice's father) who orders Dodgson to take it up with the queen upon her visit to Oxford. Dodgson chickens out on the day of her visit and instead takes the three Liddell sisters rowing on the river. There he begins to tell them the story of Alice's adventures in Wonderland. Down the rabbit hole goes the real-life Alice to begin her legendary encounters with the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Red Queen, and all of Carroll other amazing creations. (USA/France/UK, 1951, 83 min., color 35mm print from BFI) Puppets On The Sound Focus on Alice in Wonderland ADULTS ONLY - NO ONE UNDER 17 ADMITTED Speaker: TBA Members: $9 / Public $13
